I really like my system to alert me when I have an even upcoming. Since I have Firefox open throughout my entire work day, the Google Calendar Notifier extension for Firefox fits the bill nicely. Unfortunately, it has not been maintained for a while and doesn't work in newer releases of Firefox. A blogger named Ruben has updated the extension and posted the working version on his blog here.
